Common Questions
Is counseling right for me?Seeking out therapy is often a difficult and personal decision. There are many reasons why people may decide to come to therapy. Sometimes it is to deal with long-standing issue, or struggles with anxiety or depression. Other times it is in response to unexpected changes in life such as a being laid off or going through a divorce. The purpose of counseling is to 1.) identify issues; 2.) create goals to resolve those issues; and 3.) achieve positive results through a process of personal change. Working with a therapist can help provide insight, support, and new strategies for all types of life challenges. Therapy can help address many types of issues including depression, anxiety, conflict, stress management, marital problems, and general life transitions.
Is therapy confidential? In general, the law protects the privacy of all communications between a client and a counselor, and I can release information about our work to others only with your written permission. But there are a few exceptions to confidentiality defined in the state and federal statutes. The most common of these exceptions are: (1) when someone is in danger of being harmed such as suicidal or homicidal; (2) when a court issues a subpoena; or (3) when child/elder abuse and/or neglect is involved.
